Comparing Jane Smiley's A Thousand Acres and William Shakespeare's King Lear Jane Smiley's novel A Thousand Acres is a modern version of William Shakespeare's King Lear.   The tragic ideas brought out by King Lear are revisited in A Thousand Acres both containing universal themes in which societies from past to present can identify with.   Tragedy is a form of drama that depicts the suffering of a heroic individual who is often overcome by the very obstacles he is struggling to remove.   The novel and play each contain distinct tragic elements that lead to the development of similar characters, plot, and images but both have distinct themes.   A Thousand Acres provides a new interpretation of Shakespeare's classic tragedy allowing the reader to create a unique twist to their opinions of the Lear family. William Shakespeare's tragedy of King Lear begins with the King's decision to divide his kingdom between his three daughters.   He gathers them all together, and tells them he will divide up the kingdom according to whoever has the most love for him.   Goneril and Reagan, the two older daughters, make big declarations of love in order to get the shares they want of the kingdom.   The youngest daughter, Cordelia, tells Lear that she loves him, as a daughter should love a father.   Lear becomes angry and disappointed with Cordelia's response feeling she has shown a lack of devotion so he takes action and banishes her.   When Kent, a close friend of Lear, attempts to defend Cordelia, but as well he is banished by Lear.   Cordelia marries the King of France and goes to live there. The kingdom is equally divided between Goneril and Regan.   These two daughters are evil and decide if Lear becomes too much of a problem then they will take d... ... which would have prevented this tragedy.   The blinding Gloucester becomes ironic because when he is blinded he is able to see that he has judged his son Edgar wrongly and it is Edmund who is evil.   Similarly, in A Thousand Acres   Loren the loyal son is the cause of his tragedy.  Ã‚   Both Lear and Larry become mad after giving up their power too early.   When Lear turns his kingdom over to his daughters he looses respect and power which cause him to go mad.   When Larry signs his farm over to his daughters he looses control of the land and goes mad.   Works Cited and Consulted Bradley, A.C. For example, when Othello explains to the Duke about their nuptials between him and Desdemona he nobly says, â€Å"That I have ta’en away this old man’s daughter, It is most true; true that I have married her† (I iii 93-34). Othello delineates his trustworthiness because he doesn’t try to keep the marriage a secret and tells the Duke up-front when he asks. In addition, he is straightforward to others when Iago warns Othello about Brabantio finding out about the marriage and tells him to go inside and he says, â€Å"Not i. I must be found. My parts, my title, and my perfect soul Shall manifest me rightly. Is it they?† (I ii 35-37). The general of the Venetian army is confident in himself that his service and stately fall will cause everything to calm down, he is also certain of his worthiness to Desdemona and that he deserves to have her and her love. Iago is pleased with his deceitful plans and sits back and savors the many lies he has told. For example, Iago shows his despise in integrity by whispering to himself that, â€Å"I am not what I am â€Å"(I i 71) and to Roderigo, â€Å"I follow him to serve my turn upon on him† (I i 45). Iago is acting like someone he is not to get the life he desires and is taking advantage of Othello just to proclaim his revenge for him and Othello does not know about it. Furthermore, when they defeated the Turks and decided to celebrate, Othello takes Desdemona up to their room, and Iago comes up with a plan for Roderigo to win back Desdemona by telling him, â€Å"Do you find some occasion to anger Cassio, either by speaking to loud or tainting his discipline, or from what  other course you may please, which the time shall more favorably minister† (II i 288-292). Iago is getting Roderigo to fight Cassio to dishonor him and is lying to Roderigo because he is telling him that this is how he can get Desdemona back but in reality Iago Is getting everyone who loves and trusts’ him only to turn them against each other for his own enjoyment. Integrity is shown through Othello because of his actions and the way he perceives difficult situations, but through Iago he displays no integrity to him or the others around him. While both of these characters may juxtapose in integrity they also greatly contrast in their devotion to the people in their life. Othello’s relationship with Desdemona is so affectionate and deep that he would do anything for her even though they had just recently wed. For instance, when Othello comes back from being lost at sea he shows his profound loyalty toward Desdemona by saying, â€Å"If it were not to die, ‘Twere now to be most happy, for I fear My soul hath her content so absolute that not another comfort like this Succeeds in unknown fate† (II i 205-209). If Othello were to die, he would die happy because he does not think that he will ever be as happy again, he believes that she is the only woman for him. The article I chose to review is â€Å"Pornography consumption and sexual behaviors as correlates of erotic dreams and nocturnal emissions.† The author of this interesting article is Calvin Kai – Ching Yu of Hong Kong Shue Yan University, North Point, Hong Kong. The document type is a journal article and it was published by Educational Publishing Foundation in October of 2012. The type of study that was done for this article was empirical study and quantitative study. â€Å"The study presented here was geared toward exploring the degree to which the frequencies of sex and wet dreams are modulated by sexual behaviors during wakefulness, including viewing pornography.† The study examined the degree to which erotic or wet dreams are modulated y sexual behaviors and the use of pornography in your waking life. Since it had been noted that erotic dreams are much more prevalent in men than in woman and it was going to be much harder to factor in both genders data into t he analysis of sex dreams, he only used male participants for this study. The real purpose of this article and study was to see I pornography, sexual fantasy, erotic dreams, and masturbation had any significant effect on sexual behaviors awake or sleep. To do so Yu had to put together some kind of method to test a group of men on, in order to find out the answer to his question at hand. The Hero’s Quest follows a specific pattern of stages the hero goes through on their quest. Typically this hero goes through great physical, mental and lifestyle changes to transform from a normal person into a hero on one quest, attempting to overcome one obstacle. Beowulf is an epic poem written during the time of the Anglo-Saxons; heroism is a motif commonly found in literature during this period. Beowulf tells the journey of a young man who transforms into a hero and accomplishes what was thought to be impossible.
